Anadolu Cam’s “Glass and Glass Again” Project Inspires European Bank of Reconstruction and Development

Among the world's leading glass producers, Anadolu Cam, a Şişecam Group Company, has inspired European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) with its "Glass Becomes Glass Again" project. EBRD announced that it will provide 125 million USD finance for its "Near-Zero Waste Initiative" program that aims to minimize waste in Turkey, and declared that their decision to support the program was inspired by the "Glass And Glass Again" project.

European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has been inspired to provide 125 million dollars by Turkey's leading glass packaging producer Anadolu Cam Sanayii A.Ş.'s project "Glass and Glass Again", which was launched in 2011 in order to raise awareness on recycling among the public. EBRD announced that they would provide a total of 125 million USD finance to 12 investors under the "Near-Zero Waste Initiative" aimed at minimizing waste in Turkey, and declared that they have been inspired by the "Glass and Glass Again" project for this support.

One of the most comprehensive sustainability and social responsibility projects in Turkey, the "Glass and Glass Again" project aims to create a behavioral change in the society in order to enable shifting to a recycling society.

2 billion glass bottles were not wasted

Since the launch of the project, 180,000 primary school students have been trained on glass recycling. Anadolu Cam has collaborated with 125 district municipalities in 20 cities, primarily metropolitan cities where glass-packaging waste is high. Almost 11,000 glass-recycling banks have been donated to municipalities. Until now, 517,000 tons of glass, that is, 2 billion glass bottles have not been wasted. At the end of 2014, the rate of glass waste that has been recycled and turned to raw material for glass packaging production has reached 17 percent thanks to the Glass and Glass Again project.

A single bottle provides energy to run a computer for 25 minutes

Glass is a packaging material that can be 100% recycled without any loss of quality. At the same time, an input of one glass bottle waste is enough to produce one glass bottle. Using 10% broken glass in production means saving 12% raw material, 2.5% energy, and reducing carbon emissions by 5%. Recycling a single glass bottle saves energy enough to run a computer for 25 minutes or a television for 20 minutes.
